Frequently Asked Questions:

What do you do in mock trial?
Mock Trial is a lot like debate but with a performative twist. In each trial there are attorneys and witnesses.  Our practices are usually spent preparing our roles or practicing a specific skill like opening statements or cross examinations.  Attorneys are responsible for questioning witnesses, giving speeches and arguing objections before the judge. It's similar to debate in the kind of preparation and focus required for the trial. Witnesses are responsible for telling the story of the case. Possible witnesses include eyewitnesses to the crime, experts, defendants etc. Witness roles are typically more performative and there's a lot of freedom with where you can take the character.
I don't have mock trial experience, is that okay?
Yes, that's perfectly okay!  Mock trial is ultimately a learning community- we're here to learn new things about the legal system, public speaking and performance.  If you have a passion for those things we'd love to have you!
Can I still do mock trial if I don't want to go to law school?
Absolutely!  You do not have to be pre-law school to do mock trial.  While mock trial is a great way to learn about law, it's also a great way to practice public speaking and communication, which are useful skills  for any profession.
Can I still do mock trial if I play a sport?
Yep!  We practice in the evenings to accommodate as many sports practices as we can.  Our competitive season lasts from October until February and is the most intense from January to February so fall and spring athletes are usually able to compete with us.
How do I join?
We will hold auditions in the fall for new members. We will be looking for critical thinking skills, creativity, adaptability, oration skills, and writing skills. The auditions involve annotating a deposition, write and present an incomplete opening statement, and get cross-examined as a character witness. The process is simple and we will guide you through it to give you the best chance at success!
Does it cost money to join?
No. We think that mock trial should be an activity accessible to everyone regardless of financial situation. There is no membership fee and travel expenses come out of our budget, not out of your pocket.
Why should I choose mock trial over debate or some other club?
Actually you don't need to choose one or the other; we support students pursuing activities they are passionate about.  But if you only have time for one, we strongly encourage you to choose mock trial.  You'll gain a unique understanding of the legal system and mock trial helps you develop leadership and critical thinking skills in a way few other activities can.  We're also a family, we get a lot done in practice but that doesn't keep us from joking around and having a good time!  The cooperative nature of mock trial means you'll get to know us really well and make some new friends!

If you're still unsure, come to our interest meeting in the fall  and let us convince you!
